Our History
Pioneering Eutectic PCM Cool Storage Technology for Advanced Energy Solutions

Transphase Systems, Inc., founded by Mr. Ames in 1982 in Huntington Beach California, was the first company to introduce Eutectic PCM Cool Storage Technology for chiller systems.
Transphase installed over 90 major eutectic PCM cool storage systems from 1983 to 1995. Using a 47-degree F phase change material, the storage systems collectively reduced on-peak demand by over 25 MW, storing over 125,000 ton-hours of cooling capacity and serving many large commercial and industrial facilities.
In 1983, Transphase installed the first commercial Eutectic PCM Cool Storage System at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California, and soon began manufacturing and installing systems in major facilities worldwide. With the backing of major environmental venture capitalist organizations, Transphase was the first to propose and enter into Power Savings Agreements with electric utilities, under which the utilities paid Transphase based on the measured power savings achieved at the host facilities. Transphase installed major systems at data centers, hospitals, schools, office buildings, and industrial facilities.
During this period, Transphase also began using heat exchangers and cooling towers to charge the 47-degree F PCM during winter months, installing such “free cooling” systems for winter operation at Marriott Desert Springs Resort in Palm Desert, California, and the McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing) helicopter manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona.
Transphase Systems Inc.’s crucial role in the energy storage industry led the way to Fusion Phase Technologies and its development of new Eutectic PCMs for greatly expanded free-cooling, chiller-less air conditioning unmatched in its energy and environmental efficiency
Our Successful Projects
Rossmoor Towers Leisure World
Serving twin residential 14 story towers, this was one of Transphase’s first major facilities. The system was sized as a full storage system for the six hour on-peak time period. The tank was placed underneath a grassy area, as shown.
Read more in a brochure published by Southern California Edison about this project and the sizable 400 kW-plus drop during the on-peak time period.

Allergan Pharmaceuticals
In this new construction application, the eutectic PCM cool storage system was placed underneath the mechanical equipment room.

St. Mary Medical Center
Transphase installed systems at many major medical facilities. Pictures below are of St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, California.

Long Beach Memorial Hospital
Here is another major medical center where Transphase installed its Eutectic PCM Cool Storage System. Here the tank was placed underneath a parking lot.

AT & T Corporate Facility
Here is an installation at an AT&T office building using a 47 degree PCM. This type of Eutectic PCM Cool Storage systems served many major office building facilities.
